Lifetime Learning Tax Credit

Program Purpose

To provide a federal tax credit (decrease in the amount of federal taxes owed) for adult learners--individuals returning to school, changing careers, or taking a course or two to upgrade their skills, and college juniors, seniors, and graduate and professional students.

Eligibility Requirements

The credit can be claimed by families with one or more individuals in college (student need not be pursuing a degree or other recognized education credential) for all years of postsecondary education and for courses to acquire or improve job skills.

Award Amount

A tax credit of up to $2,000 per return.
